It was dark and cold but refreshing.

Last night, when my "second-wind" kicked in and I got a burst of energy at 8:00pm, I bundled my little angel up in layers and layers and off we went to the Niagara Blvd.

It was dark and it was cold but it was refreshing. I pulled her on a sled for about 1/2 hour and for the first time all day, she was quiet! Whew.

Walking down by the water is truly one of my favourite things to do. It brings me:

Peace of Mind: The muffled sound of my steps on the snow has such a soothing effect on my soul.

Hope: Walking in the cold and the dark reminds me that there is a season for everything. It is cold and dark now but soon the sun will return, soon the spring will arrive. Soon my health will return as well.

Strength: Walking in the cold, feeling the wind on my cheeks, and not stopping even though a part of me wanted to reminded me that I have the inner strength, just as I have outer strength and this perseverance has brought me to a state of Awareness. There is Peace in the Awareness of the Moment and in that Peace is Strength.

Peace of Mind, Hope, and Strength...without it we would not have gotten to where we are today.

The Presence of the Sun

What is my health teaching me about myself today?

Some of us have great health and some of us have health issues and some of us have poor health.

For about 5 years I've had troublesome symptoms that I didn't understand. Now they've become so prominent that doctors are able to identify the symptoms and "name" the problem. As with many things in nature, the remedy to my health issues will make the symptoms worse before they get better.

So today I didn't feel good until I hid under the covers of my bed. I slept for a while and just laid there for a while. I was thinking about how my body is not "Me" but that "I" am in the Awareness of the experience of this body and its poor health.

It's a really cloudy and overcast day today. And when I was laying there in bed, when I stopped fighting the physical need to rest and came to accept it, I had thoughts of how the sun shines behind the overcast clouds. In my heart I am still shining even though my body is ill. And just as the clouds pass and the season changes so will this season of weakness change.

I know I'm not the only mom out there that is dealing with health issues. Being Present and Aware and Accepting helped me release the anger and frustration about my condition and helped me find a place of Peace today. I trust you will too.

Learning how to shine

How will I find rest and relaxation in the middle of a busy mom day?

I know why it's so hard for me to find rest in the middle of the day. It's because I have this 'absurd' idea that I don't want to serve canned, pre-made food to my family. So a good 25%-45% of my day is spent preparing, cooking, serving, and cleaning up after meals.

Combine that with my extreme distaste for the television and the result is a well-fed, high energy 3 year old that just wants to Go-Go-Go!

Somewhere between cooking, writing, laundry, trips to pre-school, swim class and gymnastics, my doctor has advised me to REST.

I feel almost guilty when I sit for a few moments.

But my health now requires it.

So now I know in order for me to truly shine I need to truly rest. And little by little I'll learn how.

Today I don't feel like a sun

Today you don't feel like the sun. Maybe yesterday you didn't feel like the sun either. Or maybe you've never felt like the sun. I've been there too. You're not alone in that feeling and I applaud you for recognizing that that is how you feel.

I don't feel like you found this blog by accident. I'm glad you are here and I want you to know that I fully believe that right now you have the answer you need to help you feel better. The answer is not in me but it is in you. But because I have also felt the way you feel right now and I was able to overcome many very difficult challenges I know that you can too.

What I want you to do is trust me. But trust does not just appear merely because we want it too. Trust is developed little by little, day by day. The reason I want you to trust me is because I want to help you remove the clouds that are blocking the way for you to feel the powerful sun that is within you.

When you read my blog title, you felt like you were not very sunny. The sun is bright. It is happy. It is powerful. It is the source of life. If you are not feeling sunny, maybe you feel sad, depressed, confused, powerless, hopeless. Whatever you are feeling is okay.

I too have felt it all. I am not a doctor. I am not a psychotherapist. I am just a person who didn't like feeling sad and powerless anymore and I sought for answers to make me feel better.

I didn't find answers in alcohol or drugs. I didn't find answers in relationships. I didn't find answers in any presciption.

I found answers in books. I found answers in nature. I found answers in meditation. Most importantly, I found answers in Trust.

First, I had to trust that there was an answer.

That is why I want you to trust me. If you trust me, then you will trust that what I'm saying is not for my advantage but for yours. And if you trust me you will begin to feel hope that what I'm saying is true.

Without being a doctor or a trained specialist of any sort, you can heal yourself. You can find your inner sun. You can be the woman you want to be. You can be the mother you want to be. In whatever way that looks for you in your life.

It's okay to not feel like the sun. But don't just feel that way and agree to submit to that feeling for the rest of your life. Feel cloudy if you like, but look for the answers in the clouds. Because I'm here to tell you that they are there.

Meditating for Answers

At times when I feel the most stress, the most confusion, the most fear, my standard and most reliable solution is meditation. Whether I am seeking an answer to a relationship problem, a financial problem, or a parenting issue, I found answers in meditation.
Anyone can learn to meditate. You do not need to be a monk or an experienced Yoga practitioner to find solutions in meditation. I know this, because I am neither of these. Yet I have been meditating for 15 years and have found it is one of the surest way to reduce stress and solve problems.
At its heart, meditation is about stillness -- stilling your body, stilling your mind. And if you have never tried meditating before because it seemed too complicated, consider that anyone can meditate because anyone can be still. We only have to try.
We live in such a busy world and we have trained our minds and bodies to be in overdrive. Perhaps we have been going so fast for so long that now the very idea of being still seems futile. Perhaps you’ve tried meditation before and didn’t feel comfortable. Perhaps you’ve enjoyed a few moments of stillness at times but never thought of it as being a tool for moving past personal obstacles and challenges.
My challenge to you today, if you should chose to take it, is to find 5 minutes to sit still and DO NOTHING. Okay, not really do nothing. Sit still and focus on your breathing.
Your mind will say, “Focus on my breathing? That’s BORING!” But that’s just your busy mind trying to pull you away from your stillness. When those types of thoughts enter your mind you just notice them and let them go. Give them no power. Repeat to yourself. “I am focusing on my breathing. I am calm. I am still.” Or use whatever words work for you.
Your mind will drift. That’s okay. Just bring it back to your breathing.
Here is what I do to find an answer through meditation. You can do this too.
Breathe deep into your belly. Breathes so deep that your belly button pops out. And as you breathe out imagine all the stress leaving you. Breathe in calm and breathe out stress.
Do this for 5, 10, or 15 minutes (whatever works for you) and you will be amazed at how refreshed you feel afterwards.
Once you are calmer you can begin to train your mind to find solutions in your meditation. But first you must be able to sit still, in body and mind, so that when the answers do start to emerge you will see them and recognize them.
Our minds are like a pond. When we are continuously busy it is like always throwing things into the pond, making ripples, making splashes, making waves. When we calm our bodies by being still our minds the waves of our mind begin to subside. When we can sit in stillness it is as though the waters become still too.
When you look into a pond that is moving, busy with tadpoles, dragonflies, and water spiders all you can see is the action of the things on the water and the movement of the water itself. But when you look into a motionless pond, you see your own reflection, you see the reflection of the tree behind you, of the sky and clouds.
Looking at our lives with a still mind is like looking into a pond with still waters. When we still our minds, we get a clearer picture of ourselves. In that clearer image we will see what exactly we need to do, or think, or see, in order to move forward towards our goals. When we notice this deeper reflection of ourselves and we notice a thought or an idea that may be a solution to a problem, we can try it, and if we try it and it works it will move us further towards recognizing our own potential. We will become more in line with our true selves. We will become happier and feel more fulfilled in our decisions and life path.

9 Gifts I Traded for $45,000

Recently I came across someone on Facebook whom I haven’t seen in about 5 years and she wrote, “Wow, Rachel, you’re really well educated. You must be making big bucks by now.” And I’m still laughing about that.
If I had not have stayed home with my daughter for the past four years and if I would have gotten a teaching job right away, I would have been making an annual salary of more than $45,000.00. I’d probably have paid of thousands of dollars of student loans instead of accumulating more debt. The reality is, last year, my income tax testifies to the $3000.00 I earned. Eww! Looks bad when I write it on paper like that.
So then I look to myself and say “Self, what have you done in that time?” And that is where I realize that the salary I sacrificed is 100% worth it.
I see that there are 9 gifts that I have received as a stay at home Mom that no price tag can be put on.
1) I was there for all my daughter’s firsts – first step, first words, first bite of real food etc.
2) I was able to breast feed for one year without interruption, giving her a sound foundation for a healthy immune system for the rest of her life.
3) I was able to grow with her through each stage of development, adjusting my parenting skills according to her needs at the time.
4) I’ve been able to provide a loving home environment for her and my husband in a way that I could not have if I was over-worked and stressed out with a day job.
5) I have had the gift of being able to have control over my own schedule and take “mental health days off” whenever needed.
6) I have learned great money management skills.
7) I have the gift of truly knowing my daughter and in doing so enjoy a deep bond that has developed over four years of daily interactions.
8) I have learned more about myself, my strengths and weaknesses, and when I return to work this awareness will make me more proficient in my career.
9) I have made a decision that will have no regrets. In 20 years from now, when I look back on my daughter’s childhood I will have years worth of memories.

Whatever “things” my $45,000 salary would have bought in 20 years they will become old, out-dated and depreciated in value. But my memories will become even more valuable as the years go by. Debt can be repaid, but a childhood cannot be relived.
